The Center for Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis of Cook College, Rutgers University and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (USA/CERL) have released and distributed GRASS Global CD-ROM datasets to users around the world. These products are the result of a cooperative research and development agreement allowing Rutgers to make global digital datasets, developed jointly by CERL and Rutgers, available on CD-ROM. These datasets have been created to provide global and regional scale data to scientists, educators, and government agencies for environmental analysis. The five CD-ROMs comprise the largest single-format global GIS dataset now available.
The Center for Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis (CRSSA) of Cook College, Rutgers University and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (USA/CERL) is releasing the GlobalARC CD-ROM Database. This product is the latest result of a cooperative research and development agreement allowing Rutgers, CRSSA to convert to ARC/INFO format and distribute global digital datasets developed jointly by CERL and Rutgers, CRSSA.
The GlobalARC CD-ROM Database is for use with ARC/INFO (version 6.0 or higher), ArcView (version 2.0 or higher), and ERDAS IMAGINE (version 8.0 or higher) software and provides global and regional scale data to scientists, educators, and government agencies for environmental analysis. GlobalARC includes all of the raster data contained in CDs 1-5 of the Global GRASS CD-ROM Dataset, the largest single-format global environmental database available. GlobalARC contains 84 themes and a total of 147 raster layers (Grids) with cell resolutions of 4'48" or finer. The geographical coordinate system is expressed in latitude/longitude, with a Plate Carree/Simple Cylindrical projection. The files on GlobalARC can be accessed directly using ARC/INFO or ArcView once the CD-ROM is mounted and path name is set within the software.
Data files on GlobalARC include global elevation, bathymetry, coral reef distribution, major watersheds/mountains/rivers, soils, seasonal surface albedo, monthly precipitation/temperature, 5-year average monthly sea-surface temperature, vegetation types, ecosystem complexes, biomass productivity, phytoplankton/zooplankton productivity, fisheries productivity, agricultural productivity, national political boundaries, urban cover, Gross National Product, acid rain, desertification, tropical forest destruction, safe drinking water availability, tropical storms, winter gales, and many other specific themes.
The price for GlobalARC is U.S. $375. Overseas shipping and handling is U.S. $50. United States government agencies receive a 25% discount. As Rutgers, CRSSA and CERL continue to cooperate in locating, generating, and distributing global environmental data on CD-ROM, others with datasets that could be included in future CD-ROMs are encouraged to contact us.
