Abstract:
The Submerged Aquatic Vegetation in Barnegat Bay - 1985-87 shapefile (sav85_87.shp) was created
as part of the 'Landscape Scale Approaches to Coastal Habitat Conservation - Barnegat Bay'
study. This study focuses on the loss of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) that is occuring
in Barnegat Bay as a result of human modification and decreasing water quality in the bay and
watershed. The areas in this coverage were digitized in an effort to document and assess long-term
trends of habitat loss in the Barnegat Bay region.The data for this coverage was extracted from a
report submitted by the Marine Fisheries Administration (Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife,
NJDEP) in January 1992. That report (The Influence of Water Depth and Bottom Sediment on the
Occurence of Eelgrass) was based on a survey conducted by the Bureau of Shellfisheries.
Inventories of eelgrass distribution, water depth,and bottom sediments were collected for Barnegat,
Little Egg Harbor, and Manahawkin Bays from 1985 to 1987.

The SAV8587 Arc/INFO coverage is a mosaic, created through the digitization of eelgrass delineations
mapped in the Marine Fisheries' report. The digitized eelgrass areas were subsequently compared
with the NJDEP "coast" coverage (editted to coastply2) to ensure spatial accuracy.
 
Purpose:
The sav85_87.shp was created as part of the 'Landscape Scale Approaches to Coastal Habitat
Conservation - Barnegat Bay' study. This study focuses on the loss of submerged aquatic
vegetation (SAV) that is occuring in Barnegat Bay as a result of human modification and
decreasing water quality in the bay and watershed across time.  CRSSA has compiled
earlier and subsequent SAV studies conducted in the 1960's, 1970's, and 1990's and created
shapefiles to facilitate habitat loss assessment in Barnegat Bay.

Process_Description:
The graticules of Marine Fisheries' report maps were projected from lat/long coordinates
(degrees, minutes, seconds) into UTM Datum NAD27 coordinates in Arc/Info. "Eelgrass" and
"No Data" areas were then digitized and saved in an Arc/Info coverage (SAV8027) in  UTM
Datum NAD27 coordinates. The initial coverage (SAV8027) was then projected into UTM
Datum NAD83 coordinates (saved as Arc/Info coverage SAV80) and subsequently compared
to existing Arc/INFO coverages of Barnegat Bay and the New Jersey coastline (coastply2) to
ensure spatial accuracy. SAV80 was then converted to sav0.shp in ArcView. In this shapefile
the submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) areas are synonomous with the eelgrass areas of the
Marine Fisheries' report. The "no data - assumed eelgrass" areas are the result of the Bureau
of Shellfisheries inability to enter shallow waters (<3feet).
