Abstract:
The Submerged Aquatic Vegetation in Barnegat Bay - 1996-1999 shapefile (sav96_99.shp) was created
as part of the 'Landscape Scale Approaches to Coastal Habitat Conservation - Barnegat Bay'
study. This study focused on the loss of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) that is occuring
in Barnegat Bay as a result of human modification and decreasing water quality in the bay and
watershed. The sav96_99.shp is the result of the appending the GPS point data collected in the
'Assessment of the health and distribution of  Submerged Aquatic Vegetation from Little Egg
Harbor, New Jersey' study conducted by Dr. Paul Bologna in the summer of 1999, to the existing
shapefile 'ocecosav98'. The ocecosav98.shp is the product of the CRSSA in-house digitization of
Paul "Pete" McLain's 'Barnegat Bay Eelgrass Investigation', completed in the summer of 1998.
Purpose:
The sav99.shp was initially created as part of the 'Landscape Scale Approaches to Coastal
Habitat Conservation - Barnegat Bay' study. This study focused on the loss of submerged
aquatic vegetation (SAV) that is occuring in Barnegat Bay as a result of human modification
and decreasing water quality in the bay and watershed across time.  CRSSA has also compiled
earlier SAV studies conducted in the 1960's, 1970's, and 1980's and created shapefiles to
facilitate habitat loss assessment in Barnegat Bay. The sav96_99.shp was also included in the
'Boater's Guide to Barnegat Bay and Little Egg Harbor', completed at CRSSA in 200002.

Process_Description:
The submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) areas in the contributing ocecosav98.shp were digitized
from paper maps on an Altek digiting table using standard digitizing methods. The GPS data collected
by Dr. Paul Bologna (Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences, Rutgers University) was differentially
corrected at CRSSA utilizing Trimble Pathfinder Office software,and subsequently exported for inclusion
in a GIS. The additional areas delineated by the GPS data set were appended to the existing
ocecosav98.shp to create sav96_99.shp. Note that the appendage of Dr. Bologna's SAV area delineations
convey a "best case scenario" for the presence of SAV. Therefore, any SAV areas from the existing
ocecosav98.shp not detected in Dr. Bologna's study were left unaltered.
