The Big Picture
Panoramic Views

Panoramic photographs nicely capture the regional setting around New Jersey. The great height of the Space Shuttle (~200-300 miles above the surface) enables astronauts to view large areas of Earth in a single glance out the window. Borders between states and nations are virtually invisible in these scenes, as the natural landscape is a continuous whole. The curved horizon of the Earth seen in the distance in many of these photos marks the boundary between our dynamic, life-filled planet and the dark vacuum of space. |
